Rocko’s Journey: From Overwhelm to Independence and Confidence
Rocko is a young Golden Retriever x who had problems staying alone.
Now, he can confidently stay for 4 HOURS by himself!!
When Rocko first joined Naughty Dog School, life felt very intense for both him and his owner.

Being left alone was incredibly difficult for Rocko. He struggled to settle, became distressed when his owner moved away, and relied heavily on constant reassurance. This meant everyday life was becoming restricted, with his family finding it hard to give him space or help him feel comfortable on his own.

Rocko wasn’t being “clingy” or “difficult” — he was struggling with uncertainty and a lack of confidence in how to cope independently.
At Naughty Dog School, we look beyond the surface behaviour and focus on the emotional skills a dog is missing.

Diego identified that Rocko needed help building independence, emotional regulation, and the ability to make choices without relying constantly on his owner for guidance. Instead of simply practising absences, we built a programme designed to change how Rocko felt about space, choice, and separation.
We introduced structured focus games, helping Rocko learn how to tune into his environment and his handler without becoming overwhelmed. These games taught him how to switch attention in a calm and controlled way, rather than reacting emotionally when things changed around him.

We also worked heavily on boundary games. These helped Rocko understand that being slightly away from his owner was safe, predictable, and even rewarding. Over time, this created a new understanding: distance does not mean disconnection.

Alongside this, we developed Rocko’s ability to make independent choices. Instead of being guided through every moment, he began learning that he could problem-solve, disengage when needed, and choose calm, appropriate behaviours on his own. This shift was key in helping him build true confidence.
In the early stages, Rocko found this very difficult. He wanted constant reassurance and struggled when asked to think for himself. But through consistent, structured games, things began to change.

Week by week, Rocko started to show small but important signs of progress. He became more settled in different environments, more willing to engage with his surroundings, and less dependent on constant direction.

As his confidence grew, so did his ability to cope with being away from his owner.

Rocko is now able to relax for short periods of time, make better choices when left with space, and engage more calmly with both his environment and his handler. His focus has improved significantly, and he is beginning to show genuine independence in a way that once felt impossible.

Rocko’s journey highlights something we see time and time again:
When dogs are taught how to think, choose, and cope emotionally, separation anxiety begins to lose its power.

We are incredibly proud of the progress Rocko has made and the new level of confidence he is now showing in everyday life.
